The River Kept Their Names

The tale of memory after the crown has finished counting

Author’s story and release text

The battle is over. The banners have been lowered. The crown receives land, a song, a list of losses and a new name for the field.

Clothes without bodies are brought to Morrigan. Gold on one side, black on the other. Both sides were worn by the dead.

At the river, she washes neither guilt nor memory from the cloth. She washes away the affiliation that tries to replace an entire person.

The crown counted bodies. The river kept their names.

Morrigan does not declare all the dead equally innocent.

I do not wash the guilty clean. I do not make the dead the same. I leave the deed for truth to weigh. A name is not an absolution. A name is what remains.

A name does not remove responsibility. It prevents responsibility from reducing a person to a number, a side, a function or material for someone else’s victory.

The official account needs losses and heroes. A mother does not bury a ‘loss’. She buries the person who died.

A mother does not bury losses. She buries who has died.

At the beginning of the triptych, the black wing arrived before the event. Here it stops running ahead of time and becomes a flow of names. The future has happened. Morrigan no longer warns. She stays beside what must not disappear.

The ending rejects the image of an owner of the dead:

They called me keeper of the dead.

No.

The dead were never mine.

The crown could count their bodies.

I would not give it their names.
