The Torch Does Not Choose

The tale of a guide who refused to govern another person's steps

Author’s story and release text

Hecate walks beside Demeter. They reach a crossroads with three directions: towards the witness, towards the power that allowed the abduction, and down towards the cry.

Demeter wants to know which road will return her daughter.

The torches show each direction. They reveal what can be found, what can be lost, and which part of the former life will close when a step is taken. They do not say, ‘Go here.’

A guide has many ways to control someone. One road can be hidden, another made beautiful. A choice can be given the name of destiny and then presented as though the traveller made it freely.

Hecate has the power to do this. She refuses it.

I light the road. I light the cost. I light what every choice will lose.

I hold the flame. I hold the dark. The torch reveals. The torch does not choose.

A torch is not an instruction. Its light can reveal the threshold, but it cannot move another person’s feet.

The flame can show the threshold.

It cannot move your feet.

There is another layer to the choice: the shadow of the road not taken. Not every ghost once had a body. Some are lives that never began.

Some ghosts were never bodies.

Some were lives that never dawned.

Hecate does not create these shadows. She refuses to make the comforting claim that they never existed. A road chosen can also mean a life left unlived, and the light is honest enough to show that cost.

She carries two torches. The third flame comes from Demeter’s own step.

I carried two torches.

The third flame rose from her step.

An action turns a possible road into the road someone has chosen. Hecate supplies the light. Demeter’s movement creates the third flame.
