The Command Does Not Pay The Debt

The tale of the word, the hand and the chain of responsibility

Author’s story and release text

Orestes answers that Apollo ordered him to avenge his father.

This is true.

The Erinyes do not deny the command. They accept it as one of the realities of the case. A god spoke the word. Family duty gave it weight. A person took it inside himself. A hand raised a weapon. A body received a wound.

Responsibility can be distributed among these levels.

It cannot disappear.

A command can explain the hand. It cannot become the hand.

Two musical systems exist at once. The regular language of the command explains the action. The asymmetrical debt continues the pursuit. Both are convincing; neither can destroy the other.

The command does not pay the debt. The order does not bleed.

An order can move a hand towards blood. It cannot physically take the hand’s place.

The Erinyes do not claim that Orestes was free from pressure. They say the opposite:

You were not free of duty. You were not free of choice.

One truth cannot be made false to leave another clean.

The god must answer for the word. The hand must answer for the wound.

By the ending, the Erinyes acknowledge their own limit for the first time. Debt cannot become an eternal law. A blade cannot settle blood’s demand; it only gives that demand another voice.

Blood has one language. A blade makes it repeat.

If justice has another tongue, the city must learn to hear.
