Before It Touches Ground

A tale of bloodlust that was protection

Author’s story and release text

The second part begins inside an unfinished fall. The drop has not reached the ground. Kali says, ‘Not now,’ and enters the mechanism of multiplication itself.

Hitting harder would create another copy. The only way to stop the cycle is to keep the blood from reaching the earth and acquiring another body.

Kali intercepts every drop. What the observers call insatiable hunger is a form of protection. They see a mouth, blood and frightening power. They do not see the soil beneath her feet waiting for another seed.

They saw my mouth and named it hunger. They never saw the earth I spared.

She takes the infection into herself. Her body becomes the final shore beyond which multiplication cannot continue.

I took the wound into my body. I made my blood its final shore.

Every intercepted drop means another name will not appear, another body will not rise, another cycle will receive no earth. The climax is built through copies disappearing, one after another. The world grows quieter and clearer as Kali takes into herself everything that cannot be allowed to continue.

The central line changes the meaning of the whole blood-filled scene:

I drank so the earth would not have to.

She drinks to take on what the earth and everything living on it would otherwise have to receive.

At the end, the last drop disappears. No new body rises. The earth is still. The drum keeps playing.

The enemy has ended. The rhythm of destruction has not.
