When The World Found Colour

When colour looked back

Story from the release book

Prologue

Hemera does not remember darkness as danger. Before blue, fire and the horses of the sun, she knew her mother’s skin and the silence around her. Nox held no lamp above the child and told her nothing of the coming light. Darkness simply opened, and daylight received a name.

Hemera opens her eyes before the sun. She carries no torch and leads no procession of victory. She crosses the bronze threshold empty-handed and allows the world to become visible.

The sea answers in blue, stone reveals hidden gold, a face emerges from shadow. Hemera does not make mountains rise or order rivers to flow. Her act is more modest and more immense: she reveals what already exists.

At noon comes a warning of the future. The golden rein breaks. The colours she revealed begin to burn. Hemera understands that this fire does not belong to her, but finds herself inside its consequences. Thunder does not answer her call. Instead, darkness crosses the burning sky and places a hand upon its daughter.

After the catastrophe, Day returns. Not because fire proved weaker than light, but because Night still knows her name.

When Colour Looked Back

The bronze is cold beneath her feet. Nox’s hand releases her daughter’s. The house of Night is behind her; ahead lies a world with no colour yet.

Hemera takes a step. Water gathers the light she has brought and opens in blue. Stone warms beneath her palm. A river catches the sky; a leaf unfolds into green. She does not yet understand why different things answer differently.

At first, Hemera thinks light moves only outwards: from hand to stone, from stone to sea. But colour returns. Clay answers in red, leaves in green, distant hills in violet. No shade stays constant, because each surface receives light in its own way.

Above the sea, she sees her reflection for the first time. Light has given a form not only to the earth, but to her. At the edge of her face, where brightness meets foam, a dark line appears. Hemera sees Night within her light and understands the way home.

The final meaning is not that the world owes her its beauty. Light turns out to be a relationship. Hemera gives it to the earth; the earth turns it into colour and returns it to her. She recognises herself in the world’s answer rather than in solitary radiance.

The coda leaves her with one quiet acquisition: the sea releases her reflection, but Hemera takes blue with her.
