Thunder Without Sound

The second time he touched thunder

Story from the release book

Prologue

The last candle burns too low. Wax runs onto the hand of a person trying with all their strength to hold on to at least one thought.

Hypnos waits neither in the room nor behind the door. He appears where breathing changes, beyond visible space. No board creaks; no step crosses the floor. Night simply becomes the rhythm of his entrance.

The sleeper’s fingers open one by one. The flame shrinks and turns blue. The person does not fall out of life. They allow Sleep to carry them.

Hypnos closes the door behind the eyes with a long descending melody rather than a command. He knows the weight a body gives up when wakefulness loses its grip. He holds its breath beside his own until the east turns blue.

Then the song tests the scale of his power. Even thunder loses its voice; lightning leaves the hand; the highest head beneath the sky grows heavy. But Hypnos refuses to make this the meaning of his existence. He does not come to conquer. The smallest child closing its eyes entrusts him with no smaller a mystery than the king of the gods.

Thanatos appears in the bridge. The brothers share darkness, but not dawn. Death knows the room morning never enters. Hypnos hears the east behind him and chooses the road back.

In the morning, the person wakes. Sleep keeps nothing for himself.

The Second Time He Touched Thunder

Hera finds Hypnos where an island sleeps. In her hand is a promise: a golden throne that time cannot destroy.

A storm can already be heard beneath her words. Hypnos understands the request before she speaks it. Once before, he closed Zeus’s eyes. When the thunderer woke, the upper air turned white, the sea rose after his hand, and the entire sky searched for Sleep’s trace.

Hypnos ran to his mother’s open door. Zeus stopped where Nox began.

Now the risk is offered again. But Hypnos does not need a golden throne. One name has long lived inside him: Pasithea. She moves through his sleep like breath within a song. Hera places one hand on the earth and the other upon the shining sea, and swears by the Styx to give him the Grace.

A golden cloud covers the summit. The wind forgets the fir tree. Hypnos waits until the hand that holds thunder rests peacefully upon Hera’s skin. Then he crosses the distance of a breath.

For the second time, he touches thunder without a sound. He draws no chains on Zeus’s hands, drops no crown and declares no victory. The sky stays in place. Thunder simply does not rise.

Hypnos leaves Zeus breathing in the cloud. Hera remains beside him. The god of Sleep finds Poseidon and says, low and with almost no change in tone, ‘Turn the tide.’

One line changes in the ending. At first, thunder did not rise. Now the choice belongs to Hypnos himself. He is neither a servant of intrigue nor the queen’s instrument. He knew the fear and remembered the pursuit, and still decided to act.

After waking, thunder returns. Pasithea’s name remains.
