The House Never Held Us Both

One more breath

Story from the release book

The last stars loosen in Nox’s hair. Hemera is already waiting on the steps.

Her daughter touches her cheek with a palm. They smile before they can speak. Light moves slowly along her mother’s sleeve, and both know that this meeting is measured not in hours, but in the brief time it takes one hand to slip from another.

In the morning, Hemera goes out into the world. Nox enters the warmth left on the stairs. The house holds only one of them again.

All day, the mother keeps her daughter’s touch upon her skin. By evening, their roles change. Stars wake in Nox’s hair, and Hemera catches her sleeve and quietly asks her not to go. Now the daughter stands inside the house, while the mother descends into darkness and Nox’s name travels along the empty corridor.

They are immortal. Infinity lies ahead of them. But infinity cannot give them what they want: one ordinary stretch of time spent in the same room.

In the bridge, Nox remembers that she once knew nothing of farewell. She held her daughter beneath her heart while the world was dark, then watched her fill the sky. The birth of light already contained the first separation: to become Day, Hemera had to leave her mother’s arms.

At the next dawn, an open palm waits on the steps again. The chorus returns with a single change. Before, Nox wanted one more breath. Now she holds her daughter for one more breath.

This does not cancel the law of the house. The cosmos does not collapse. The hand still opens. But inside an eternal cycle they create a moment that belongs only to them.

Her daughter steps out. Day begins.
