The Sky Could Not Keep Him

The sky could not keep him

Narrative adaptation from the final lyrics

Zeus watches his son beneath the spears. With a thought, he could pull Sarpedon out of the battle. But other gods have mortal children too. He leaves the measure of the mortal hour in force, and bloody rain falls from the sky.

Apollo carries the dead man out of the noise of war, washes him, touches his wounds with ambrosia and prepares the body for the journey. Breath does not return. He entrusts Sarpedon to Sleep and Death.

Hypnos stands on one side, Thanatos on the other. Their roads differ: Sleep’s road can open eyes at dawn; Death’s road does not turn back. Here, their hands carry equal weight of one person.

Below them lies the field, where victory is still being demanded. Ahead is Lycia, Sarpedon’s land. His family speaks his name and receives him from the twins’ hands.

The sky can mourn its son, but cannot keep him. War called him glory. At home, they call him son. The armour remains with the war; the person returns home.
