The bronze was cold beneath my feet.
Her hand released my own.
Behind me stood the house of Night.
Ahead, a world unknown.
I took one step beyond the door.
The air had yet no hue.
Then water gathered what I bore
and opened into blue.
The stone grew warm beneath my hand.
The river caught the sky.
A leaf unfolded into green.
I did not yet know why.
When the world found colour,
the colour found me too.
The sea received the light I held
and gave it back in blue.
When the world found colour,
I watched the dark grow clear.
A thousand shapes returned my light
and drew the distance near.
The clay received me, answered red.
The leaves replied in green.
The hills replied in violet
where none had ever been.
I moved across the waking earth.
No colour stayed the same.
Each surface changed the light I gave
and sent it back unnamed.
I thought the light moved only out,
from hand to stone to sea.
Then all the colour travelled back
and laid its hand on me.
When the world found colour,
the colour found me too.
The sea received the light I held
and gave it back in blue.
When the world found colour,
I watched the dark grow clear.
A thousand shapes returned my light
and drew the distance near.
At last I bent above the sea.
The water held a face.
The light I carried everywhere
had given me a shape.
And at the border of my cheek,
where brightness met the foam,
I saw the dark within my light
and knew my way back home.
When the world found colour,
the colour found me too.
The sea received the light I held
and gave it back in blue.
When the world found colour,
I learned what light could be:
not only what I gave the earth,
but what it gave to me.
The sea let go.
I carried blue with me.
