Her hand was warm against my own.
The world beyond was still.
The dark had kept the shape of smoke.
No morning crossed the hill.
The bronze lay cold beneath my feet.
The door stood open wide.
I saw the waiting edge of Day
and could not step outside.
My mother did not bid me go,
nor ask me there to stay.
She only turned her palm to mine
and let me choose the day.
I did not bring the morning whole.
I let it enter thin.
Not light enough to hide the scars —
enough light to begin.
I did not drive the dark away.
I carried it within.
The world did not need endless light —
just enough to begin.
The river carried strips of ash.
The clay was split and dry.
A child stood where a house had been
and watched the paling sky.
A woman called across the field.
A distant answer came.
Two figures found each other's hands
and spoke each other's names.
I could not mend the broken earth.
I could not make it green.
But faces hidden by the dark
were waiting to be seen.
I did not bring the morning whole.
I let it enter thin.
Not light enough to hide the scars —
enough light to begin.
I did not drive the dark away.
I carried it within.
The world did not need endless light —
just enough to begin.
The light I gave could show the wound.
It could not close the skin.
But hands could find the broken place
and know where to begin.
My mother's dark was not the end.
My light was not the cure.
Between her hand and morning's edge,
I knew what light was for.
The open door remained unchanged.
My hand was not the same.
Beyond it, through the ashen air,
a woman called a name.
I did not bring the morning whole.
I let it enter thin.
Not light enough to hide the scars —
enough light to begin.
I did not drive the dark away.
I carried it within.
The world reached out from hand to hand —
and morning could begin.
Her hand opened.
I stepped outside.
The day began.
