I said, “Until I come home.”
You waited where the old key turned.
The road kept adding to the distance.
I thought I had time to return.
Then your name turned from “is” into “was.”
The rooms did not know what to do.
One black shadow lay beside the silence.
The house kept waiting for two.
One month, you came back for a lifetime.
One month was all time gave at the end.
The first one began at a doorway.
The last left a bridge still ahead.
Until I come home,
keep the last room warm.
Let your black keeper circle
through the silence before dawn.
Until I come home,
guard the weight the fire made light.
There is water waiting for us.
I will take my father home.
Now you come to her in dreams without warning.
No border can follow you there.
She wakes with your cup in the morning
and reaches to find empty air.
The chain catches light by her bedside.
Your book keeps your voice on the page.
Love outlived every distance.
In sleep, every border gives way.
We could not come home for the ending.
No hand closed the circle in time.
But the fire stayed true to our promise.
It left one small weight behind.
Until I come home,
keep the last room warm.
Let your black keeper circle
through the silence before dawn.
Until I come home,
guard the weight the fire made light.
There is water waiting for us.
I will take my father home.
You loved where the bridge crossed the water.
You always stopped halfway through.
The river kept moving beneath us.
I learned how to stand still with you.
I will come for the weight you left me.
I will carry it out in both hands.
Then water will finish the journey
that distance and fire began.
Until I come home,
keep the last room warm.
Let your black keeper circle
through the silence before dawn.
Until I come home,
guard the weight the fire made light.
There is water waiting for us.
I will take my father home.
When the road releases me,
when the old key turns,
I will lift you from the silence
and say:
I came back for you.
I came to take you home.
