Until I Come Home

The promise to return

Story from the release book

The son left believing there would still be time to return. Then his father's name had to be spoken in the past tense. The house holds his belongings, his ashes and the black cat who still makes his rounds. The mother dreams of him and wakes beside the cup and book she has kept for years. Distance prevented the family from gathering at his final threshold.

The son still has a promise made while his father was alive. They used to stop together halfway across a bridge, where the father loved to watch the river. When the road releases the son and the old key turns again, he will take his father to that place and honour their decision. Until then, he asks the keeper to keep the last room warm. The chorus moves toward return rather than a funeral; the water keeps moving. At the end, a phrase from the parents’ first meeting changes hands. Once the father told the mother, “I came for you.” Now the son will tell his father, “I came back for you. I came to take you home.”
