The house lights fell. The painted rooms went dark.
She wiped another woman's tears away.
The dancers left their thunder in the boards.
He waited by the posters in the rain.
No orchestra announced what passed between them.
No witness knew enough to call it love.
By morning, painted cities lay in crates.
The road took him away.
She did not count the days for him.
She gave the night no larger name.
Four ordinary weeks went by.
Then the door opened on the rain.
A month later,
he was standing at the stage door,
all the distance on his coat,
two tickets in his hand.
She said, “What brought you back?”
He answered without theatre:
“I didn't come to see you.
I came for you.”
He brought no flowers, no rehearsed forever,
no borrowed line polished for the scene.
He brought two tickets folded in his hand
and room beside him on the morning train.
She took one book and left the scripts behind.
The mirror kept the women she had played.
Before the town could teach her how to doubt,
she closed the door and left.
Nothing had been promised.
Nothing had been proved.
He had made the journey back.
She chose the journey too.
A month later,
he was standing at the stage door,
all the distance on his coat,
two tickets in his hand.
She said, “What brought you back?”
He answered without theatre:
“I didn't come to see you.
I came for you.”
Years later, strangers stopped them in the street
and asked what film they'd stepped out of.
They never knew the scene that joined their lives
had played to no one in the rain.
A month later,
he was standing at the stage door,
all the distance on his coat,
two tickets in his hand.
She never asked him to promise.
He never offered proof.
He said, “I came for you.”
She said, “Then let's go.”
The years would move the walls.
The maps would lose their names.
But nothing ever altered
the choice made at that door.
“I came for you.”
“Then let's go.”
