A photograph wakes in the palm of a hand.
The crease runs through both of their smiles.
Behind them, a room still learning their names.
Ahead of them, uncounted miles.
Two tickets became one key on the table.
One suitcase lay open for weeks.
The walls knew nobody when they arrived.
Before long, the rooms knew them by heart.
No mark on the floor.
No cue from the hall.
The light entered without permission.
No one was acting at all.
No camera rolling.
No director, no cue.
Still every window framed them
as if the light just knew.
No camera rolling.
Nothing arranged or rehearsed.
The picture only caught them.
Their life was there first.
A third breath entered the room without asking.
A small fist closed around his thumb.
He learned to cross the floor without thunder.
She learned which songs kept the morning calm.
The mirror gave back three faces at breakfast.
No costume. No flattering light.
Whatever the photograph failed to remember
kept breathing just out of the frame.
The photograph held what a stranger could see:
two faces too bright to be true.
It could not hold mornings, the work or the waiting,
or the thousand small choices they made.
At the edge of the room, the map stayed perfectly still.
No border had entered the frame.
For one clear second, the world behaved itself.
Every country kept its name.
No camera rolling.
No director, no cue.
Still every window framed them
as if the light just knew.
No camera rolling.
Nothing arranged or rehearsed.
The picture only caught them.
Their life was there first.
The photograph sleeps again in the drawer.
The map keeps its place on the wall.
The light leaves the room without explanation.
Nothing has moved at all.
