Why Do You Know My Name?

A name on the wire

Narrative adaptation from the story bible

Evening Vallenn was wet, glassy and familiar. Elise left the Registry with her passport in her pocket. The document still belonged to her. The city simply no longer opened doors for it.

The hotel found no booking. The bank saw no account. The telephone operator could not confirm a subscriber with her details. Each refusal looked like a separate inconvenience: someone behind a counter checked, shrugged and handed her the paper back. Three such refusals in a row no longer looked accidental.

She walked between shop windows and watched the reflections. Two men in heavy coats stayed behind her. They neither ran nor hid. When she changed her pace, they changed theirs. The city did not know who she was, but these men never lost sight of her.

A phone rang in an empty booth.

Elise had dialled no number. She had not even touched the rotary dial. The black receiver rested in its cradle, and the call was already meant for her. She picked it up and heard her full name.

An unfamiliar voice told her to return. Its calm carried the same certain knowledge as the man at the Registry who had asked her to stay. She was being offered a choice, yet the voice already knew where she stood and which receiver she held.

Elise listened beyond the words to what made them possible. If her name existed nowhere, how had it reached the other end of the wire? If she had vanished from the city, why did her pursuers know every turn?

‘If no file remembers me, why do you know my name?’

The line went dead.

She could no longer accept this as a mistake. Denial and surveillance operated at the same time. Someone wanted her not to exist for the hotel and the bank, while remaining a very specific woman for the men in coats.

Elise held the summons to the light. An indented service route showed through its reverse, something the paper had kept beneath the printed words. It led to an old photographic archive.

She remembered Eve Noll’s number herself. She needed no book, file or screen for that. In the darkroom, a woman answered who recognised her voice.
