When he woke, he reached first for the other half of the bed. The pillow was cold. Then he saw the open wardrobe: an empty space between his clothes, a hanger on the floor. An unanswered phone lay on the bedside table. He did not notice the note straight away. He picked it up, read it, then read it again, although the words no longer changed.

He tried to reconstruct the evening before. He had told her something he had never said to anyone: ‘I need you.’ Even before she left, he had seen her expression change. Now she was gone, while he had been asleep. Beside the broken vase lay a frame with no photograph. Everything in the room seemed to repeat the same thing, and he could not stop looking.

Later, he would look calmer. He would stop asking, explaining and waiting for answers. He would learn to close the door first, and notice that women held on to him more tightly. But that morning, clutching the note, there was no strength or victory in it. He simply decided never to give anyone the chance to find him like this again.
